The wild west was hard to live in, and even harder to grow in. The various lands were rugged in their own ways. From tall and rocky mountains, to dense and dark forest and even to the hot dry deserts, the west was the ultimate test on a person. If that's what you would want to call them. There were stories of how long ago there were "humans" that roamed the earth, but after the last iceage that destroyed all of their advances, they died out, leaving the world to the animals once more. Now, they took the west, in bodies that were a cross between their own and humans. They were just starting to colonize the west, and expand it with new advances (well new to them).
Huck Kassidy had been born in the east, far across the Mississippi river, in the forests of the new england banks, until he was a couple years old. Still a kit, but orphaned when his parents caught the illness that was common in the big cities. It was from there that he was put on one of the new trains and shipped out west, with hopes of beind adopted. He was scared, but he tried to be brave. Though, it was hard to be brave when the other orphans always picked on him. They called him small and dull in color. He was not used to this, for he had been one of the largest and most bold in color of all the grey in the east coast, but across the mississippi, things all changed.
He was in the dusty, middle-of-nowhere orphanage for almost a year before some roamer adopted him. A family of four came in to the building and were looking at all the kits and cubs. He could hear them say that the species and gender did not matter, though the mother, a small but ferocious looking sandy colored canine, seemed less pleased by her mates words. The father of the family was very large, and black with white marks. His eyes were devilish red, but he was clad in nice brown pants, button up shirt and had leather and silver bracelets on his arms, which milded out his intimidation factor. The two pups, (He was certain they were wolves now for the shape of their faces were quite thick yet elegant), were bright eyed and sweet looking. The male was black and white like his father, while the female was grey, white and black.
The family sat in the play room. The two pups started to socialize with the orphans, looking for their new brother or sister, while their parents watched. Huck didn't like that the other orphans were getting attention and he wasn't, so he pushed his way to the two pups.
"Wanna' play robin hood?" He asked as his bright blue-grey eyes glistened.
"Whats... Robin Hood?" The male pup asked, eyes showing interest.
With a couple other pups and kits at his side, he started to reenact and tell the story of Robin Hood, the great red fox that took from the rich and gave to the poor....
That had been years ago. Since then, that family had adopted him and gave him his new nickname, Huck.
Now, he was full grown, though small compared to his wolf brother and parents, and walked in their pawsteps of being a roamer. Of course, he added a bit of jazz to his lifestyle....
He sat behind the bushes and watched as the Bear's, whom ran the nearby dying town of Tentson, met up with a merchant. The mercant, whom was a mule, lifted himself from his four-legged position and unstrapped himself from his cart as he greeted the Mayor and his helpers.
Huck smiled to himself as he eyed them. He knew for some time now that the Bernison, the Mayor, had been taking much of the town's main food and income source for himself. But, you may ask, why would he do such a thing?
Huck laughed to himself at the thought of anyone asking him such a question.
Because their most prized resource was the Huckleberry, and Bears LOVED huckleberries. Most of the jobs in the small dying town were based around the production of Huckleberry products.
Jams.
Soaps.
Candy.
Everything. Not to mention how much of the people's diets included the vitamin rich berry. With so much little food in the area, the people lived off of their own income source.
Of course, that didn't explain why Huck was there, spying on the mayor now. He had a plan to get a few buckets of those wonderful berries out of the cart, and into the hands of his own Roaming people. From the Rich to the Poor, right? Just like Robin Hood. But there was just one little problem....
"HUCK KASSIDY! What are you doing?" River's words were sharp but quiet as she popped out of a treeline behind him. She was clad in a tan leather-like cloth skirt and a matching top that showed her stomach and arms and not to mention most of her back. Across her shoulder was a burlap sack that he could see was filled with herbs and various other plants.
"Hush, River! I am so close," He turned back to look at the bears and mule, but just as a rock smacked into the side of his head.
He yelped slightly and turned to look at his sister.
"No you're not! Now lets go before you get into trouble! Don't make me get Daharro!" Her voice grew a bit louder and more stern as her lavender eyes narrowed. Huck turned, looked at the Mayor one last time, then stood with a sigh. He brushed off his brown pants, then his white undershirt and picked up his purple and blue striped buttonup shirt from the ground.
"You own me, River," he muttered to himself, earning another glare from his sister.
River waited untill he was beside her before turning and leading him down the dusty trail back in the direction of their camp and away from the town.
"How did you find me?" he asked. He thought he had left no trail.
River rreached into her bag and pulled out a purple bandana. Huck's hand went to his neck frantically. His neckerchief was gone! Damn! It must have come off---
"Found it in the thicket next to the path. Then saw the Ol' Mule with his cart. Put two and two together, ya' see." River handed the bandana back to Huck and he proceeded to tie it around his neck once more.
"You better hope Ma' don't find out. She will skin you alive," and with that, River darted forward laughing.
