Leora sighed, flopping on her back. The helicopter's wings thundered noisily above her head. She had needed to get out of the city and hit the road, and the mysterious rumors of a river monster in Hawaii had sounded great, to say the least. She doubted it existed, but anything to get her out of that place. Anything to get away from what her parents, her family expected of her. She was supposed to be getting her master's degree, pursuing a perfect GPA and a 100% in every class. She was taking the year off, however. She just hadn't quite mentioned it to her parents yet. They'd been asking her about classes and she just couldn't deal with it. So she'd checked out and headed to Hawaii with her 'mentor.'
The blonde girl was aware of how stupid it sounded, but even as she closed her green eyes for a moment, pretending that everything was quiet and that she wasn't about to go deaf, she knew she needed some time away. Maybe she'd get some cahones out here and stand up to her parents and tell them she didn't want to be a doctor, and that she really just wanted to study wolves, that she wanted to pursue biology. Which was why she was out here. To study the creature that haunted these rivers, if it really existed.
Which Leora doubted.
When one of the pilots waved their hands at her, Leora sat up curiously. "WE'RE TOUCHING DOWN." The pilot yelled to be heard over the thundering of the blades, and Leora nodded once. Mere moments later, the helicopter hit the ground with a thud and Leora leaped from the helicopter even before the blades stilled. She waved a goodbye to her pilot and wandered off, headed towards the building. It had a thatched roof, and was rather quaint, but Leora figured that it was more of a tourist trap than anything else.
Maybe there'd be someone with some information on this creature that probably didn't even exist. Ugh, why had she even signed up for this? Oh, right, because it was Hawaii. And because Celit had roped her into it with those big green puppy eyes of his. Why he even cared about this thing escaped her, but hey. While he traipsed around the island looking for its eggs, she'd go sunbathing and enjoy a vacation while Celit looked for ghosts.
Seemed like a good plan to her!
Leora grinned as she wandered into the little hut. There were a few other people there, and most of them seemed to be drinking. Well, it looked like she'd stumbled across a bar. Today was not going to be as fun as she hoped. She could only hope that Celit would be done with his excursion into the woods soon and then she could pester him into having a good time while she chilled on the beach.
In the mean time, "Can I get some water please?" Leora questioned with a bright smile. though the man looked slightly irritated, he did, in fact, procure a glass of water, which Leora drained eagerly.

He sat behind the bar, bored. Sure, they were busy, but with three bartenders in this small bar, "Mute" didn't really have a need to be there. The young man only stayed there because his boss liked having him as a "freak show" to attract more customers. With silvery stitches keeping his lips shut, he was certainly the most unusual person on this part of the island.
A helicopter flew over, but Mute didn't spare it a second glance as he looked at the various people whispering, silently wondering if it was about him. Not that he cared. He was used to it by now. So, he just sat there, in his racer back tank top, and blue-grey shorts. His shaggy, dull, brown-tan hair hung into his face, slightly damp from sweat and the humidity in the air.
Then his ears picked up on a tourist's converstation. It was about that odd beast again. He snorted slightly and slid lower in his seat, bored. He didn't believe the rumors about that odd creature, and just tuned out the rest of the tourist's conversation. His ears then picked up the word "water". His goldish and purple eyes shifted to the young woman that was being served by one of his coworkers. He frowned, making his stitches stretch and pull at his skin slightly.
He blinked, watching her for a moment, then stood up, picked up his chair, and moved to sit across the bar from her. The moment he sat his chair down and sat himself down, he pulled a pen out of behind his ear and hair, and a napkin from its holder. Water? Never seen a person go to a bar for WATER before.[/b] he wrote, then looked back up from the napkin at the young woman. You're not from here, are you? He then added on the napkin after a moment.

She truly wouldn't have noticed the . . . person if he hadn't picked up his chair. The scraping noise made Leora look up sharply, and she raised her eyebrows at the sight of the stitched shut mouth. Creepy, and interesting all the same. How did he eat or drink? How did one survive with their mouth stitched shut. Of course, it was just as likely that it was part of a costume or an act to attract more attention to the little bar. Which Leora wouldn't have gone to at all if it weren't for Celit.
Leora watched attentively as he pulled a pen from behind his ear and started scribbling on a napkin. Still part of his costume or was he truly incapable of speaking? Leora was curious, to say the least. His creepy appearance was a bit startling, to say the least, but thus far he didn't seem too dangerous. Of course, he probably wouldn't be working the bar at a Hawaii tourist resort if he were dangerous.
Water? Never seen a person go to a bar for WATER before. You're not from here, are you?
She grinned at the writing, relaxing slightly. "I find that my work is much easier to complete with a clear head. And no, I'm not from here. I came here with someone interested in investigating the, ah, river monster on the northern part of the island." Leora said smoothly. She wasn't too worried about him, in truth. Honestly, it wasn't like he was going to attack her right there in the middle of a bar, and he deserved the benefit of the doubt, seeing as Leora didn't know his story.
Shrugging, the girl glanced curiously at him. "My name's Leora. What's yours? Can you eat with that?" She gestured vaguely at his mouth, figuring that he would know what she was talking about even without her flailing hand motions. He probably got all kinds of questions about the stitching around his lips. That was probably why he was working, she figured. It would be great for business. All kinds of curiosity would be directed towards the guy and they'd probably settle in for a drink.
Hmm. It was an interesting theory. Perhaps it would hold water and perhaps it wouldn't. Either way, Leora was interested in how he would react to what she'd said. [/blockquote]

Mute looked at the girl, taking in her slightly different apperances. He was used to seeing tourists, but she was a little less...less tourist-y than most of the others. She looked more ready to get work done. Maybe she was looking for a job? He didn't know and knew he wasn't allowed to judge.
Mute watched her eyes as she spoke, really taking in her words, and every emotion on her face as she spoke. It was just another thing to add to his "odd" list, he guessed. How many people truly watched the face and eyes of the one they were talking to? As she mentioned her drink choice and the beast that she was apparently looking for, he nodded and smiled slightly. Sure, he thought she was a bit crazy, but once again, who was he to judge? He was only one of the oddest people out there.
Once she finished speaking he slipped the napkin back in front of him and put the pen back into it's writing position. They call me Mute. I can eat. Just differently than normal people.[/i] He then motioned up to his mouth as he opened his mouth slightly, making the stitches stretch. He then stuck the tip of his tongue out between two of the stitches, then smiled slightly and released the tension on the metal like wired in his lips. Mostly small things, or shakes are my meals.[/i] He paused and thought about what he wanted to write down for her next. Once it came to his mind, he nodded slightly and let his bi-colored eyes shift back to the napkin. Why are you searching for the beast? Many do not believe it.[/i]

Mute. An interesting name for an interesting person, Leora decided with a slight smile. It was . . . weird to see him open his mouth like that, and a little bit disturbing, but Leora struggled to keep a scientific air to her thoughts as she eyed him. Why had he stitched his mouth shut, anyways? A protest of something, perhaps? She was curious, but she wasn't sure that she wanted to push it by asking him. Perhaps it was something deeply personal and he wouldn't feel comfortable discussing it.
Nodding slightly, Leora focused her attention on 'Mute' once more. "Well, that doesn't sound very filling, but to each their own." Leora said with a slight smile, "What kinds of things do you eat? Blueberries, maybe?" She was curious. Leora had always been curious, curious about things that others didn't seem interested in. But hey, this Mute character was interesting, and with Celit busy chasing ghosts, Leora needed all of the entertainment that she could get.
She hesitated for a moment when he started writing, frowning slightly as she tried to figure out how much to tell him. He was a stranger, who knew nothing of Celit's family history, but on the same note, there was no point in lying. Celit would likely never meet the guy and it wasn't like it was a big secret. You just had to ask his father, or hell, any of his friends, especially his wife, who wanted nothing more than to close that chapter of his life. But it wasn't a huge secret in the least.
So she shrugged and spoke. "A friend of my mother, Celit's mother was killed by the beast. And so Celit came here. He wants to study the creature and find out more about it. About why it hunts humans. Or hunted one, at least." Leora shrugged slightly, knowing that her rambling words had probably been hard to follow, "He wants to learn more about what killed his mother. And I figured that I'd have to be insane to pass up the chance to go to Hawaii without my parents. I needed some time off." Leora grinned easily, taking a quick sip of her water.
Looking curiously at Mute again, Leora hummed to herself. "Do you believe in the beast? Or do you think that Celit is chasing fairy tales?" She was curious to hear what the natives had to say. Well, one native, at least. She wasn't sure how trustworthy Mute's input would be, but hey, he seemed like a pretty nice guy. And even if he'd taken a very extreme vow of silence and was pretty damn tall compared to Leora's petite size, he wasn't too intimidating.

Mute pulled his paper to himself again to answer Leora's question. "if I can push it between the stitching, yeah. he wrote as he looked up and smiled at her with a friendly glint in his eyes. He was interested in her story, but understood when she seemed to keep part of it to herself. Everyone had a horror story to hide. Some were just worse than the others. He, probably more than others, understood that. So he didn't dwell on her short story and focused more on her next question.
I don't know. Seems foolish to me. Why wouldn't we see that beast more if its as big as they say it is? I won't fall for it. But it isn't impossible. Nothing is, after all.
Mute shrugged and leaned back in his chair a bit, thinking to himself. there is a pool with waterfall where they say it nests, he wrote down when he sat tall again. So he was sharing information that he knew. He didn't have to totally believe to help out. He wanted to help in any way he could. Of she wanted answers, well then he would help her get her answers. It was the least he could do. Some good could help ease the pain of his sins.
